Tabanan Kindergarten
In July 2003, I Made Yudia opened
a kindergarten in the Tabanan district of Bali. This
was the first kindergarten in this small village.
They had the building but no supplies and little
money. Yudi had been trained as a Montessori teacher
at Bali Hati in Ubud and was eager to bring these
innovative learning tools to his home village. Kindergartens
are scarce in Bali and he wants the children to have
every advantage that they can.
The children in Bali must provide
most of their supplies and buy their own uniforms,
quite often a hardship. The families of these young
children got the uniforms and worked together to
help form the first class. Yudi trained two teachers
and the class opened. The parents struggled with
the costs of the mandatory uniforms and supplies
but wanted this too. They can often be seen at the
windows watching their children learn.
The kindergarten has been so successful
that the area has already asked Yudi to start a second
one in another village and that opened in August.
The experience is so extraordinary that children
come from all other classes to peek in and to share
what they can. You can see some of them in these
pictures.
Bali High is working with Yudi
to help supply the school with learning materials
- books, blocks, puzzles, writing and drawing products,
and as much else as possible. We're having toys and
Montessori materials made by local craftspeople so
that the schools will have what they need. A percentage
of all sales goes toward the kindergarten project.
If you would like to donate, money
or educational materials, it would be greatly appreciated.
The need is constant since supplies are quickly used
up and, hopefully, there will be more kindergartens
in the future. Our goal is to create them throughout
Bali. You can contact us through this web site with
donations which can be tax deductible.
